Tidal Currents in Douglas Channel, British Columbia: Evaluation and Prediction

چکیده
Douglas Channel is the principal shipping route between town of Kitimat and Pacific Ocean. Prediction near-surface currents crucial for safe tanker navigation cleaning-up oil spills. Three years current velocity data were collected at two moorings located 30 km apart. Spectral, wavelet, harmonic analysis measured throughout upper (40-m) lower (50–358 m) water columns indicated predominant influence semidiurnal (SD) tidal currents. In layer, wind density flows resulted in considerable seasonal interannual variability these Analysis SD variance reveals three major components: barotropic, coherent baroclinic, random baroclinic. The predictability depends on relative contribution stability first components. Tidal constants estimated one year used to predict other years; we found that mooring closer entrance Channel, 80 89% energy layer 89–93% can be forecasted, while channel head, numbers are smaller: 55–70% 79–89%, respectively.

Douglas-fir Provenance Survival and Growth in the British Columbia South Submaritime Seed Planning Zone
In southwestern British Columbia, the South Submaritime (ssm) seed planning zone is a geographically and ecologically complex transition zone between the Pacific coast and the interior plateaus. The ssm follows a long, narrow band along the Coast Range (Figure 1), and is characterized by steep, incised valleys. The highly variable climate is strongly influenced by prevailing warm, moist maritim...
متن کاملPrediction and Analysis of Tides and Tidal Currents
An efficient algorithm of tidal harmonic analysis and prediction is presented in this paper. The analysis is strengthened by utilising known relationships between tidal constituents found at a neighbouring reference site. The system of linear equations of the least-squares solution is enhanced with included constraint equations. In the case of inadequate data, ill-conditioning in the system of ...

متن کاملEffects of Cattle Grazing on Birds in Interior Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) Forests of British Columbia
Livestock grazing is a dominant land use across North America and although the effects of grazing on birds have been studied in grassland, shrubland, and riparian habitats, studies of the effects in forests are rare. We investigated the effects of cattle grazing in forests on vegetation, the relationships between vegetation characteristics and the abundance of foraging and nesting guilds of bir...
متن کاملAMachine Learning Approach to the Prediction of Tidal Currents
We propose the use of techniques from Machine Learning for the prediction of tidal currents. The classical methodology of harmonic analysis is widely used in the prediction of tidal currents and computer algorithms based on the method have been used for decades for the purpose. The approach determines parameters by minimizing the difference between the raw data and model output using the least ...
